What is gyaru fashion?
Gyaru is a Japanese street style born in Shibuya in the 1990s, built on glamour and visible confidence: animal print, rhinestones, body-conscious silhouettes, dramatic hair and heavy accessorising. It splintered into many sub-styles over the years, but the through-line is the same. Deliberately glamorous rather than understated.
How do I style a gyaru outfit?
Start with a fitted base, whether that's a bodycon mini, a halter or a mesh top, then add one animal-print or rhinestone piece. Keep the layering minimal so the silhouette reads clearly. Finish with heels, platform boots or knee-highs, a small shoulder bag, and stacked jewellery. Gyaru is one of the few J-Fashion styles where less layering looks more expensive.
Is gyaru the same as Y2K?
They overlap heavily but aren't identical. Y2K is a broad 1998 to 2004 revival aesthetic, while gyaru is a specific Japanese subculture that happened to peak in the same years. Leopard, rhinestones and low-rise silhouettes belong to both, which is why these pieces work across our Y2K edits too.
