It keeps punk's core vocabulary of studs, tartan, safety pins, distressing, crosses and leather, but treats it with more precision than the original British version, often combining it with sharp tailoring or girly silhouettes.
How do I style a Harajuku punk outfit?
Anchor the outfit with one heavy piece, like a studded jacket or deconstructed denim, and keep everything under it simple. A plaid mini or straight-leg jeans works for the bottom half. Boots with visible hardware finish it. Mixing in one soft element, such as a lace trim or a bow, is very Harajuku and stops the look reading costume.
Is this the same as visual kei?
Related but not the same. Visual kei came out of the Japanese music scene and leans theatrical, with elaborate hair, heavy makeup and stage-ready silhouettes. Harajuku punk is street-level and wearable day to day, though the two share a lot of the same hardware and palette.
